Human hair of anonymous cuban, thread / fabric. 11.80 x 5.57 ft.
this is a flag that is made with human hair collected from cubans living on the island. the flag suggests the cuban flag in its design, but the colors are different. the hair is rolled into cloth strips and sewn onto the cloth, which serves as the piece’s support. the flag also can be seen from the back. this piece was created through a five-month collaboration that included other artists and cuban citizens from all over the island, who contributed their own hair and/or assisted in the rolling and sewing. this echoed, during the cuban War of independence, the role of women, who stayed home to sew what was then a flag of liberation.
